And Colchester’s Josh Bohui had that in mind when, in 2019, he decided to turn down a new contract in the comfortable surroundings of Manchester United, instead moving to second-tier Dutch club NAC Breda.

Having spent three years in the youth teams at Old Trafford after previously being on Brentford’s books, the now-22-year-old winger boldly sought out first-team opportunities in an alien environment.

And despite suffering a knee injury while in the Netherlands which limited him to just eight league appearances for Breda, he believes that experience has helped him navigate an upand-down spell with the U’s since making the move to Essex in October.

“It’s made me a stronger character,” Bohui explained. “Every footballer goes through difficult moments and when you go through them you want to learn something.
