This year’s Mysuru Dasara festivity, the pride of Karnataka’s cultural calendar, will go down in the annals of history as a unique one. Nissar Ahmed, poet laureate and a Muslim, will for the first time in the 400 year history of the Mysuru Dasara, inaugurate the festivity. R. Uday Kumar spoke to him soon after his name was announced by the Karnataka Government.
There is no better way to silence the hate-mongers than to proudly proclaim that the resplendent Dasara festival held in honour of Goddess Chamundeshwari will be inaugurated by a true son of soil and great poet K S Nissar Ahmed atop the Chamundi Hills on September 21. The event is going to go down in the annals of history because Nissar Ahmed, a Muslim, will for the first time in the 400 year history of the Mysuru Dasara, inaugurate the festivity.
A high powered committee headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah finalised his name from a list of eight other names and the entire state happily accepted the decision. With this, it is going to be ‘Nithyothsava’ for ten days of Dasara that will be held from September 21 to 31.
In an interview with Karnataka Today, the 81-year-old KS Nissar Ahmed expressed his wholehearted gratitude to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, district minister HC Mahadevappa and Deputy Commissioner D Randeep for the honour.

The Cauvery dilemma
Both north and south Karnataka are in a tizzy over water.
