Ease Of Doing Cargo
Cruising Heights
|December 2017
Among the 190 countries surveyed in The World Bank’s Doing Business 2018 report has seen India shooting up from its 130th position in 2017 to 100th in 2018 – a massive leap indeed. What does this mean to the air cargo community?
November must have brought cheer to the Indian government’s bureaucratic setup. The beginning of the month saw India creating a record of sorts. The country secured the 100th rank among the top 100 countries on the World Bank’s ease of doing business ranking list in 2018 leading Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to declare: “Historically India has been in the range of 130-140. In the last two years, we made it to 131, 130 places. This year we have jumped 30 points to 100. This is the highest jump any country has made in World Bank's ease of doing business ranking.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented too. “The government,” he said, “has undertaken an extensive exercise of stakeholder consultations, identification of user needs, government process re-engineering to match government rules and procedures with user expectations and streamline them to create a more conducive business environment.” He went on to point out that the World Bank report acknowledged “India as a top improver with the highest jump in rank of any country in Doing Business Report, 2018. India is the only country in South Asia and BRICS economies to feature among most improved economies of the Doing Business Report this year”.

India's race to build a new logistics powerhouse
India's air cargo industry is being reshaped by crisis — and opportunity. War-driven disruption across West Asia, rising freight rates, scarce freighter capacity and growing congestion at major airports are forcing the sector to adapt faster than ever before. Yet the turbulence has also opened a strategic window for India to position itself as a global logistics hub rather than merely a large cargo market
