In this season’s Celtic View, we take a look at some of Celtic’s top goalscorers throughout the history of the club and highlight a few of the moments that added to their standing in the annals of a team known for its attacking philosophy down through the decades. 

This week we have Charlie Nicholas…

FIRST GOAL, LEAGUE CUP AUGUST 30, 1980 STIRLING ALBION 1-6 CELTIC

Charlie Nicholas made his Celtic debut as an 18-year-old substitute in a 3-0 league win over Kilmarnock, where he hit the post twice, and a couple of games later, again from the bench, the striker got his first two goals for Celtic. The Hoops went into the game against Stirling Albion 1-0 down from the first leg and there was a further shock when the visitors took a 12th-minute lead to go 2-0 ahead on aggregate. Dom Sullivan pulled one back and it wasn’t until the 87th minute that Tommy Burns levelled the tie. Just three minutes into extra-time, Davie Provan put Celtic ahead before Nicholas scored either side of another Burns goal to give Celtic a 6-1 win on the day. A year earlier, Nicholas made a scoring ‘debut’ of sorts in a 3-1 Glasgow Cup win over Queen’s Park at Hampden but by then the tournament was losing its sheen.
