Khosla Associates rejuvenate an ancestral Kerala home in Wayanad by recalibrating the layout to take advantage of its lush surroundings

Shared vision

Close your eyes and picture this. Acres and acres of coffee plantation punctuated by tall trees sheathed in pepper vines. The gentle susurration of rain. Bird songs. Misty greenery in the distance. And then, on a small hillock in a clearing, a 100-year-old tharavad, a venerable edifice that has served as home to three generations of a family. With time — and change being the only constant — the home, too, needed to be reimagined and updated. However, when the owners sensed a lack of connectivity to the village community and a rather intimidating programmatic formalisation in the design proposal that was initially underway, they knew it was time for another, more sensitive, intervention. This is how Khosla Associates, helmed by Sandeep Khosla and Amaresh Anand— known for their contemplative, rooted-in-the-environment oeuvre, stepped into the metamorphic picture.
