John Ferneley Senior in his Studio at Elgin Lodge, Melton Mowbray by Claude Lorraine Ferneley (1822-1892)
THE British Sporting Art Trust (BSAT) acquired this portrait of John Ferneley Senior (1782-1860) in 2011. It was painted by his favourite son, Claude Lorraine, in 1866, six years after the artist’s death. The green leaves suggest spring or summer but Ferneley wears an overcoat against the cold of the north-facing studio in Elgin Lodge, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. His hair is brushed forward to protect his baldness.
