Giving A Great Spot Time To Produce Pays Off

Late last summer, my good friend Chris Button and I took our annual vacation to get away from guiding for a few days and enjoy some great fishing, make some memories, and relax for a bit.

We had established a good pattern of catching fish from deep weeds and had already boated several fish over 50 inches, including a 541⁄4-incher within the first 15 minutes of getting on the water. When on vacation, I don’t push it too hard and I don’t put in ridiculous hours — after all, it’s supposed to be vacation.

About halfway into the trip we were heading out for the late afternoon bite. We hit several great spots then made our way to one of my “money spots” for an upcoming moon period. We were working along a deep weed edge hitting icon after icon with nothing happening, but the “mother of all icons” on this particular edge was coming up. As we approached the magical spot, I told Chris we’d be there in two casts.
