Natalie Portman On How The Expectations Towards Makeup Have Changed!
Female Singapore
|September 2022
Having been in front of the cameras since she was a pre-teen and an ambassador for Dior Beauty since 2010, Natalie Portman surely knows more than a thing or two about putting one's best face forward - and maintaining it effortlessly. Recently, the 41-year-old was revealed as the campaign star of the French maison's latest lippie innovation: Rouge Dior Forever, which promises comfort, a clean formula and a cool 16 hours of no-transfer wear, all in a bullet. In an exclusive interview, the Thor star shares with Khong Yawen about how the expectations towards makeup have changed, and her beauty axioms that will never.

Between the time Natalie Portman last fronted a lipstick campaign (the major relaunch of Rouge Dior in January 2021) and our Zoom interview with her this May, a considerable lot has happened. Most significantly, she had shot her brawned-up, much-buzzed-about return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Jane Foster-turned-Mighty Thor in Thor: Love And Thunder, with its big release to hit just two months after our e-encounter. Along the way, she starred in several non-lippie campaigns for Dior Beauty (among them, the update of the Dior Forever liquid foundation; the debut of the Skin Glow Cushion and Couture Luminizer compacts from the same family; and the reveal of the Miss Dior EDP). What also took place: Much of the world adjusted to living with Covid, gradually loosening regulations and safety measures. Are masks optional indoors? You heard right.
Naturally, the lipstick that the silver screen sensation would next front would should not be like any others that had come before. "The pandemic really made me understand how much wearing makeup has to do with being social," she said during our video call. "It's so exciting now to go see and spend time with people, and presenting oneself to the world has so much to do with why we choose to put on makeup... It's an expression of our individuality."

CINEMA PARADISO
The house of Chanel has been a committed champion of the film world since founder Gabrielle Chanel started dressing the actresses from the United Artists studio at the request of American producer Samuel Goldwyn in the 1930s. Besides styling stars on screen and off, the brand has been an active supporter of international movie festivals, institutions and directors (local auteur Eric Khoo was one of them); has helped to restore classics such as the enigmatic Last Year at Marienbad (1961); and often draws inspiration from cinema. For Cruise 2025/26, it pays homage to the glamour of the silver screen as well as Coco Chanel's decades-spanning friendship with legendary Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti. Here's an exclusive closeup look at the collection and the many ways it's coded la dolce vita.

CALLING THE SHORTS
The power of a short film goes beyond its ability to pander to shrinking attention spans. As Thong Kay Wee, the programme director of the Singapore International Film Festival, explains, \"the format is often more inclusive because of its lower production cost, giving space for niche stories and creative freedom to exist\", adding that \"historically, short films have always been an integral feature of local cinema\".

DAYS OF BEING WILD
It began life as the Golden Theatre - Singapore's largest cinema when it opened in 1973 – and was transformed 11 years ago by Karen Tan, Sharon Tan and Blaise Trigg-Smith into The Projector. A bold, indie institution residing in Golden Mile Tower, it challenged the rules of movie-going and became the beating heart of the city's alternative film scene. To survive though, The Projector had to be more than just a cinema - and so it evolved into a space for creative risk-taking, subculture and community. Living up to its tag line, \"Not Your Average Cinema\", it rewrote what a film venue could be. Three months on from its unexpected closure this August, co-founder Karen reflects on more than a decade of cinematic rebellion, cultural experimentation and what it meant to build - and lose - a space like no other.
