Cosmic Dancer

With their latest album Glitch Princess, the Singapore-born musician-slash-cyber entity Yeule takes a quantum leap into the next phase of not only their artistry, but also person and way of thinking. Keng Yang Shuen gets up close (through Zoom) to find out how they’re learning to break from their old identities and boundaries and, in doing so, transcend the mundane realm.

The opening number on Glitch Princess – the sophomore album by the musician Yeule released last month – is titled My Name Is Nat Cmiel, a reference to what they (the preferred pronoun) go by when not performing. Coming across more as a spoken word piece than a song, the track sees them recite falteringly – like a newly birthed AI figure finding its voice – of the things they like: “I like making up my own world/ And the people who live inside me/ I like to dress up and not going out/ I like my cat Miso/ I like touching myself/ And I like being far away from my own body.”
