Rekha. The celebrity enigma of our times. A woman worshipped and reviled in equal measure, yet almost always impossible to ignore. Be it in her heydays as a mainstream Bollywood heroine or today as someone who lives on the sidelines, her hold on popular imagination has remained undeniable. No wonder then that even with no big movie release in recent times, her biography, Rekha: The Untold Story still finds somebody interested enough to write it and an audience enamoured enough to read it. It is this hard-to-capture quality of hers that the book sets out to present in a biography style, which seems to be all the rage these days. Well, in theory, at least. The reigning Queen of Indian Cinema proves a difficult subject to get a hold on, and all the book manages to do is grasp at the forcefield built assiduously around her persona. It comes up with virtually nothing that ardent followers of the film magazines of yore don’t know. So it wo
