When Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, dropped by Canada House in London on Jan. 7 to thank officials for the hospitality shown them on their recent visit to the country, no one could have anticipated the bombshell to come. The next day, the couple sent shock waves around the world when they announced they would “step back as senior members” of the royal family. “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year to carve out a progressive new role,” they wrote on Instagram, adding that they would “work to become financially independent” and divide their time between the U.K. and North America.

While they’re no doubt weary of the spotlight — Harry has called out the press for “bullying” Meghan — the extraordinary retreat came at a critical point for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. As Star reported,
