Believe it or not, the Orange is the New Black star has not seen her Emmy-winning prison dramedy.
When you were first cast as Piper Chapman, did you ever think the show would go on to Season 5? Netflix has already renewed it for another two seasons.
TAYLOR SCHILLING: I knew when we made it five years ago that it was something very special, but I never thought it would [become] what it is now.
What do you think is the key to the show’s longevity?
Honestly, what clicks with the people is how the show depicts authentic relationships. When you pair good writing with actors who set their priority on burrowing down to the seed of truth — you learn what it means to be a human, what makes people tick, what makes them explode, what makes them not want to live, and what makes them continue to keep kicking to live. So I think the show is always focused on the internal workings of these characters’ experiences as women, which I think is rare. There’s never been an emphasis on what their [appearances] are like.
How much have you changed personally since Season 1?
