Summer is right around the corner. And when the days are long and sultry, all people need to feel comfortable are cozy cotton pajamas or slinky satin ones. Pajamas are enjoying a fashion renaissance worldwide and have transformed from sleepwear or loungewear to a quirky fashion statement.

We have the British to thank for making pajamas so famous all around the world. In the late 1800s, the British colonialists discovered pajamas at their eastern territories. In fact, the etymological origin of 'pajama' can be traced back to Persia. It can be literally translated to 'leg garment'. The English brought the pajamas with them as exotic loungewear and pajamas remained a status of elite status in Europe till the beginning of the 20th century.

In the 1920s, pajamas had their first fashion revival when men started teaming silk or cotton pajamas with traditional nightshirts for nightwear. At the same time, the Coco Chanel came up with her line of lounging pajamas for women. They had straighter cuts and made of silk or cotton of high thread count. Women welcomed the attractive alternatives to their nighties and thus the pajamas became even more popular.

Within the next 3 decades, 'shortie' pajamas were in vogue for women and by the 1960s, millions of women were wearing 'babydoll' pajamas. We have been through the phases of palazzo pajamas, political statement-making pajamas to reach the pajamas-as-dailywear fashion wave of today.

It has been quite some time since pajamas have broken out of bedrooms and conquered the streets. Summer being just around the block, people want to wear something that is comfortable and chic at the same time. And what better way to both look and feel great than by wearing pajamas! The sheer variety of styles can make anyone want to spend all their days wearing only pajamas.
