Hospitality In The Aftermath Of A Natural Disaster
Hotelier India
|March 2019
A recently published report by STR charts out the decline and the ongoing revival of the hospitality sector in one of India’s foremost tourist destination – Kerela, after the catastrophic deluge.
-
Kerela witnessed one of its worst floods in history that left a trail of devastation. Along with several other sectors, the tourism industry too came to a grinding halt in its aftermath. The floods were then followed by the Nipah Virus outbreak, which further hindered the visitor numbers for the year, leading to a decrease in room demand. Given this, a recently published report by STR took stock of the decline and the ongoing revival of the hospitality sector in this region.

The report mentions that the state’s hotel industry took a step back in 2018 with a 5.9% decline in revenue per available room (RevPAR) to INR2,892.34. That drop in the key hotel performance metric was largely due to a decrease in occupancy to 56.0% (-11.6% from 2017 levels).

Kill The Snake, Don't Break The Stick!
Banquet Managers bump up pricing to cash in on the peak season and hit sales targets. Due to the high demand, and limited supply, guests are forced to pay exorbitant rates.
