BioSpectrum Asia March 2022

The life science company Sartorius, through its subgroup Sartorius Stedim Biotech, acquired cell culture specialist Xell AG headquartered in Germany, in 2021. To discuss the latest developments in the company following this acquisition, BioSpectrum spoke to Jean-Marc Cappia (J-MC), Head of Cell Line, Media & Testing Solutions, and Stefan Northoff(SN), Head of Product Development for Cell Culture Media, Cell Lines & Testing Solutions, both at Sartorius. Edited excerpts;

“We are expanding our capacity across Asia”

Are there any changes/new trends to be seen within the bio-supply market that the company would be leveraging?

J-MC: The main trends across the industry are in gene therapeutics, and there has been huge progress in the market within the last three years. Xell has been developing solutions for HEK293 cell culture to support these special applications for over a decade and - now with Sartorius - can offer high-performing HEK293 media and suspension adaptation services to maximise titers and overall production efficiency.

If we switch gears and look at the trends from a supplier perspective, a significant business driver is an increasing need for assurance of supply, influenced by the availability and tight control of raw materials. The high production capacity of Sartorius allows us to offer customers a more secure supply chain and a greater variety of products. Sartorius is also continuing to grow and expand production globally, including establishing new production sites in Germany, Puerto Rico, Israel, and South Korea. Additionally, there is a growing requirement for greater control over raw materials. To address these concerns - as well as creating a more robust and higher performing product - we are developing leaner formulations with fewer components, contributing to reduced risk and more secure access to the necessary raw materials.

Are you planning to launch any new products this year, or any other major announcement is likely?

Quantum Computing: Future of diagnostics is being coded today

A silent revolution is being built at the intersection of biology and quantum physics. After decades of pushing the boundaries of diagnostics with advanced imaging and AI, we are now approaching a hard computational wall. For complex conditions like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and many cancers, the interacting variables of genomics, proteomics, and real-world patient data are simply too vast for classical computers to master. This limitation caps the ability to move from merely spotting correlations to uncovering true causation. Unlike traditional AI, quantum computing can simulate underlying physical systems to derive precise solutions. The transition from correlational analysis to causal simulation will enable a more valuable and advanced frontier in diagnostics.
