NUMBER plate spotted on the back of a bright yellow Corvette Stingray: AHOON – steered by a white-haired senior citizen, and he wasn’t hanging about. Made me wonder if this guy was a time-warped rock ’n’ roll rager from the era of Elvis and the Beach Boys, perhaps an escapee from an old folks’ home, totally determined to grow old disgracefully while flying as low and fast as possible.

It’s strange how we sometimes accidentally discover a brilliant new technology. Early in my race car construction career, I built a high-performance FE Holden sedan for a great guy who wanted to go Appendix J road racing. Put in a huge amount of hours, both in the creation and ongoing development of this Forest Green car, learning as we went and ultimately winning many scratch races and claiming the title of the fastest Holden in the state. It still ran the original 138 side plate six with triple inch-and-three-quarter SU carbs, a Waggott cam, a heavily ported head with EH valves and a Strange extractor exhaust system, along with a three-speed FE gearbox, Henderson springs all ’round and a 19mm-thick anti-roll bar up front to try and minimise the in-built terminal understeer.
