Better Grip, Better Down force, Better Car. AMG Finally Dials  in Its Flagship.

THE AMG GT S IMPRESSED almost no one at this magazine’s 2016 Performance Car of the Year testing. Admittedly, that was a reflection of the caliber of the competition—even the Ferrari 488 GTB couldn’t muster enough votes to win. But it also reflected disappointment with the hot Benz, which lacked the nuance and chassis balance to go with its hand-built engine and six-figure price.

Is the even more powerful and expensive GT R any different? AMG chief Tobias Moers’s track side advice at Portugal’s Portimão race circuit indicates it is indeed. With an easy smile, he explains the best way to tackle the sphincter tightening last turn before the straightaway—along, fast, blind, downhill right-hander—is with the stability system off and all four wheels drifting. Moers, an executive who likes to push envelopes more than pencils, is clearly a gutsy and skilled driver, but you don’t need to risk life and limb to get the most out of the GT R, because it’s more focused, rawer, and yet also more manageable than the GT S.

CHASING THE DRAGON

In this job I take a lot of great road trips in a lot of great cars, but I never got to drive the Porsche 918 Spyder in 2013 when it was new.

THE CARS

Welcome to the 2026 Road & Track Performance Car of the Year. I am delighted to bring you the following work of a select team of pros at R&T. The coverage of this year's PCOTY spread out over the next 28 pages is the result of nearly a year of planning, a week of long but glorious days, and a not inconsiderable amount of money. That said, before you flip furiously to the final page of this presentation to see what won, or head to roadandtrack.com to watch the Performance Car of the Year video and read the myriad other stories about these nine cars, I ask that you hear me out on a couple of provisos.

MULTICAR CRASHES ARE NASCAR'S SPECIALTY.

There’s nothing in racing more brutal, or more shamefully entertaining, than a field-clearing wreck at a NASCAR oval. The recipe for disaster is simple: Start a race with a large field of cars, then run them at breakneck speeds with little breathing room. Voilà, vehicular mayhem.
