The Brezza Made It Big – Everyone Knows This. Can the Nexon Do Something Similar?

- Raunak Ajinkya

The Big Time

It takes some serious might for the old to take on the new. The past is littered with instances of persistence taking on exuberance, and it hasn’t always turned out well. What we have here is something similar. The Vitara Brezza isn’t one to be trifled with. Everyone that’s come in its way has either put up a semblance of a fight and withered away, or simply thought better of it before attempting something as futile as mounting a challenge. These are big and probably unnecessary words to describe a car comparison round, but don’t let the enormity of the task at hand escape you. There’s a good reason the Brezza is where it is currently. It’s one mighty successful car for Suzuki in India, and as the months go by that doesn’t seem likely to change.

And why should it? It’s got practically everything. It’s got that SUV-ish stance that’s a big hit in India currently. At the same time it’s not an SUV. Its dimensions won’t allow that tag to latch itself onto the Brezza. It’s cleverly packed with a lot of useful features; enough to keep most occupied and content. There’s enough space on the inside, the interior looks pretty nice, the seats are comfortable, the boot is big enough, the engine is powerful and manoeuvrable at the same time and the car drives like a dream. To cap it off, it’s priced pretty well, and all this equates to a big homerun for Suzuki.

CHARACTER CERTIFICATE

Recently, I drove the new Mahindra Bolero, an all-black number that somehow still manages to turn heads and spark conversations. Of course, the bare-basic automobile made me wonder out loud at length about its nature. The seats were terrible, it didn’t go very fast, it didn’t steer all that well at whatever speeds it could muster, and stopping was as much a matter of braking technology as it was of prayers. But I liked it. It had character. It sort of reminded me of the Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber, which once pleasantly surprised me with its lovely nature, even though I was done for by the end of the day. The days spent in the Bolero and on the Bobber confirmed what I've always known — too much character is bad for my back.
