Bosch, the global technology and solutions provider, is betting big on connected industry or Industry 4.0 to enhance and bring about a revolutionary change in the way work is done in a manufacturing set-up. Riding strong on this belief, Bosch is set to implement Industry 4.0 in all 15 of its manufacturing facilities in India.Auto Tech Review was recently invited to Bosch’s Chakan plant near Pune to see how the company has man aged to enhance competitiveness in manufacturing, and drive efficiency in its production.
Increasing digitisation and interconnection of products, business models and value chains in the industrial sector have brought about a massive shift in how companies are looking at manufacturing. Many call it the fourth industrial revolution. Call it what you may, but the fact is Industry 4.0 or connected industry or smart manufacturing, is helping organisations improve productivity and quality of products substantially.
One of the early proponents of the digital revolution worldwide, Bosch is also set to implement Industry 4.0 in India, in each of its 15 plants. The use of this state of-the-art technology has enabled the company understand processes better, react in real-time and respond much quicker to customer requirements, said Dr Andreas Wolf, Executive Vice President, Manufacturing and Quality, Bosch India.
The real and virtual worlds of production have interconnected man, machine and material, where each of these players converse with each other. In times to come, Dr Wolf said, connectivity will not just remain valid for manufacturing, but will also make way into all other business processes. Everyone and everything will be connected. Data and know how will be shared in real time, and Internet of Things and service will help us become a more agile company, he said.

Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.
