Governing bodies have introduced the protocol after 17 horses died in the European EHV-1 outbreak

New Self-Certification To Help Prevent Spread Of Herpes Virus

A NEW self-certification process for riders aims to minimise any spread of equine herpesvirus (EHV) as shows get underway around Britain.

As the European EHV-1 outbreak continues, British Equestrian’s (BEF) Equine Infectious Diseases Action Group (EIDAG) has recommended the implementation of self-certification forms for riders to declare that their horses are healthy and have not been in contact with any others showing signs of infectious disease.

BEF member bodies including British Showjumping (BS), British Dressage, and British Eventing will use the forms, which are expected to be in place until 12 April, but could stay in place for longer “should the risk level dictate”.

“Member bodies who agree to implement self-certification will work with their organisers and venues on a system to make the declaration before the horse arrives at the venue. Competitors should follow the information on each competition schedule on how to submit their information,” said a BEF spokesman.

BS chief executive Iain Graham told H&H it is hoped the process will put biosecurity and equine health at the forefront of everyone’s mind.
