Fish farmers depend on reliable, affordable power. Load-shedding and off-the-grid solutions are both problematic.
Load-shedding in November and in recent weeks is a worrying development for aquaculturists. The calls to “get off the grid” are all very well for householders who can reduce demand to under 2kW, but is this a viable option for fish farmers?
Water, being a heavy substance, is difficult and expensive to move from A to B. Unfortunately, the demands of a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) mean that constant flow is required for life support. If filtration ceases for even short periods, bacteria suffocate and produce toxins that on restart can poison the fish, so a constant flow must be ensured.
