DDR offers significant advantages that align with Sri Lanka's best interests. It provides a faster path to solvency, decisively addresses the mounting debt burden, and allows for the quicker restoration of debt sustainability, leading to economic recovery. It establishes a foundation for macroeconomic stability, and by reducing the risk of falling into another debt crisis, we can build a more resilient economy capable of withstanding external shocks, now gathering like storm clouds over the horizon as concerns grow over the shaky global economy.
Many countries that undergo debt restructuring often find themselves trapped in a cycle of recurring restructurings. We can break this pattern by addressing our domestic debt and establishing a sound platform for long-term fiscal discipline.
However, restructuring domestic debt must be accompanied by responsible fiscal policies and a comprehensive plan to attract investment and improve credit ratings. By doing so, Sri Lanka can lower borrowing costs, enhance its creditworthiness, and regain access to global capital markets.
