Some people shudder when they see a classic Land Rover that’s not as ‘right’ as possible. Others just appreciate a great truck. Your view on the 107” Series I Station Wagon in this issue of The Landy will very much depend on which of these camps you’re in. It’s been brought back home after a life of hard work in Australia… then fitted with a Tdi engine, Stage 1 axles, full-syncro box and 265/75R16 tyres on deep-dish rims. An abomination? Some will say so. But it was restored to be a usable classic, not a collector’s item. As far as we’re concerned, it’s an outstanding example of both. The modified Td5 90 in this issue is an outstanding example of something else, which is how easily a Defender can get under your skin. Its owner only bought it to carry him mountain bike around… but next thing he knew, it had turned into a self-propelled Terrafirma catalogue. There’s news of Land Rover fans rallying round to help medics in Ukraine, too, as well as a revolutionary new way of cleaning rusty chassis and body parts without damaging them in the process. And we have an appreciation of the life of Tony Gilroy, ‘the man who saved Land Rover’ and the genius behind the creation of the Discovery. A hero indeed.
