The February issue of 4x4 magazine, on sale 10 January, is a big one. Because this is the issue in which we announce the winners of our annual 4x4 of the Year awards.

The last two winners have been budget-conscious vehicles, in the SsangYong Rexton and Suzuki Jimny. Will it be the same again this year? Let's just say we don't think anyone is going to accuse us of being boring…

Our awards cover the whole of the new 4x4 market, from crossover estates to performance and luxury SUVs and hardcore off-roaders. The overall winner could come from anywhere… and it'll be revealed only in our new 4x4 of the Year issue!

Elsewhere in the magazine, we've got a full test on the new Mitsubishi L200, as well as a very cool modified version of the old model – and an astonishing Ford Ranger running on a new tracked conversion for use on extremely soft ground. We've also got the full story of the first new-shape Jimny to be converted into a pick-up by the masters of the art at KAP.

In addition, we've been to the experts to ask one of the biggest questions facing used 4x4 buyers. It's brilliant, but it's an infamous money pit – so should you risk a Land Rover Discovery 3?

Our travel stories this month come from Mongolia, which has long been a popular desination for overlanders, and the south of France – where the Gorge de Verdon, often known as the other Grand Canyon, has just been opened up to 4x4 adventurers by a new tour from Active 4x4 Adventures.
And a little closer to home, our monthly Roadbook explores the green lanes of the southern Lake District – one of the very best destinations in the UK.
