Why A/L students neglect English

English is often referred to as the international language because it is widely used in education, business, science, technology, and global communication. In Sri Lanka, English is recognized as a link language and is considered an essential skill for higher education and employment.

Despite its importance, a significant number of students studying for the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (G.C.E. A/L) examination tend to neglect English. This issue has become a matter of concern because proficiency in English can greatly influence a student's academic and professional future. Several factors contribute to this neglect, including academic pressure, social attitudes, lack of confidence, teaching methods, and limited opportunities for practice.

One of the primary reasons why Advanced Level students neglect English is the intense pressure associated with the A/L examination. The Advanced Level examination is one of the most competitive examinations in Sri Lanka, as it determines admission to state universities. Students are often required to dedicate long hours to studying their main subjects, such as Biology, Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, Political Science, or other specialized subjects. Since university selection depends mainly on the grades obtained in these subjects, students naturally prioritize them over English. Many believe that spending time on English will reduce the time available for subjects that directly affect their university entrance. As a result, English is often viewed as less important and receives minimal attention.
