Rainy weather and Vitamin D

The Island

June 19, 2026

Rainy weather can quietly affect vitamin D levels in a way that is often underestimated, especially in regions that experience prolonged monsoon seasons or frequent overcast skies.

Rainy weather and Vitamin D

Vitamin D is unique among nutrients because the body can produce it internally when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from sunlight. This natural synthesis depends not just on being outdoors, but on receiving sufficient UVB intensity, which is highly sensitive to weather conditions, time of day, season, and environmental factors.

During rainy weather, cloud cover significantly reduces the amount of UVB radiation that reaches the earth’s surface. Although some UV rays can still penetrate clouds, their intensity is often weakened or scattered, which lowers the efficiency of vitamin D production in the skin. As a result, even individuals who spend time outdoors during cloudy or drizzly days may not receive the same vitamin D-producing benefit as they would under clear skies. Over time, this reduced exposure can contribute to a gradual decline in vitamin D stores, particularly if the weather persists for weeks or months.
