AI Has Collapsed The Cyber Clock

As Claude Mythos signals a new era of machine-speed vulnerability discovery, India’s payments, banking and legacy systems face a sharper test of cyber readiness
IT WAS NOT supposed to happen like this. In the third week of March 2026, a content management system misconfiguration at Anthropic left a pre-release draft blog post sitting in a publicly accessible cache.
Within hours, it had been screenshotted and distributed across AI forums and financial news feeds. The language was not the measured prose of a communications department. It described a new model as ‘far ahead of any other AI in cyber capabilities’ and warned it could ‘spark a wave of advanced attacks’ unlike anything previously seen.
Cybersecurity stocks fell sharply. Anthropic confirmed the model's name, Claude Mythos, and that it would not be made available to the public. The shockwave reached India within days.
By the time Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman convened an emergency inter-ministerial meeting on April 23, with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and senior officials from the RBI, NPCI, MeitY and the Indian Banks’ Association in attendance, the tone had shifted. This was no longer being treated as a routine cyber concern. The word used was “unprecedented”.
That shockwave arrived in a landscape already burning. According to Cyble’s APAC Threat Landscape Report for Q1 2026, India was the most targeted country for ransomware, 45 incidents in a single quarter, a 165 per cent increase year-on-year.
Groups including The Gentleman, Sinobi, Vect, Tengu, and CLOP were running ‘spray-and-pray’ campaigns across IT, BFSI, healthcare, and manufacturing simultaneously. Mythos did not create a threat environment for India. It arrived at one already on fire.
What Is Claude Mythos?
Mythos is not a consumer product. It is Anthropic’s frontier research model, a probe designed to test the upper limits of what a large language model can do autonomously in software security and vulnerability research. The results alarmed even the people who built it.
