Night time scents
Arrange containers brimming with fragrant plants near a seating or dining area, ideally in a spot where breezy gusts won't disperse the perfume. Richly scented oriental lilies*, such as ice-white 'Casa Blanca' or 'Muscadet', with its white and pink freckles, are floriferous and easy to grow. Tall (H. 1m) and elegant, their curved-back flowers glow like starbursts at twilight.
For something smaller, but just as sniffable, a clove-scented pink, like Dianthus 'Mrs Sinkins' (H. 50cm), is a pretty addition, especially in a cottage-style garden. Or opt for night-scented stock (Matthiola longipetala; H. 60cm), a hardy annual with tiny flowers that open late in the day.
