YOUR BETTER HALF

The marathon distance often seems to get all the glory - whether it's Eliud Kipchoge breaking the two-hour barrier or everyday runners trying to bag the six World Marathon Majors. But a greater number of runners target the half marathon, with over two million global finishers a year in 2018, compared with 1.1 million for the marathon*. So here's why attempting a 21.1km race is a smart goal to work towards right now.

It's Not A Time Suck

Marathon training can feel like a full-time job. It involves cramming in kays when you're not working, parenting and trying to manage life. But training for a half is only around 60% of marathon training, explains Hiruni Wijayaratne, one of Sri Lanka's most decorated athletes and the current half-marathon record holder (1:14:28).

Half marathons are not only easier on your schedule, but you won't burn through shoes due to heavy mileage, or have to get those aches worked out with regular massages, Wijayaratne says. "The half marathon offers the challenge of long-distance without the time commitment," says running coach Heather Knight Pech.

It's Still A Challenge
