BRITISH honey producers are in a sticky situation after anti-fraud investigators found jars had been mixed with cheap sugar syrup.
The EU examiners said none of the 10 samples they looked at could be classed as real honey.
They added: "Such practices defraud consumers and put honest producers in jeopardy as they face unfair competition from operators who slash prices, thanks to illicit, cheap ingredients." Hundreds of honey samples from 18 countries were tested.
Investigators found 46% contained "at least one marker of extraneous sugar sources", with honey exported from the UK to Europe having a 100% suspicion rate.
They said this "could be the result of honey produced in other countries [being] further processed in the UK before its reexport to the EU"
A spokesman for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said: "The Government takes any type of food fraud including honey very seriously."
