<p>Production costs are up about 23% but growers have only seen an average 0.8% rise in income, says British Apples &amp; Pears Limited.</p>
<p>Ali Capper, from Worcestershire, said some growers have shut down orchards as&nbsp;they can no longer cover costs.</p>
<p>The former National Farmers&rsquo; Union horticulture board chairman&nbsp;said: &ldquo;There is something fundamentally wrong. The shopper is being charged 27%, 25%, 46% more for apples, yet that increase in price is not coming back to the growers.</p>
<p>&ldquo;They can&rsquo;t afford to replant them and some of the businesses are actually going under, going&nbsp;bust.&rdquo; Ms Capper also blamed some shops for importing cheaper apples from abroad.</p>
