THE number of wet wipes washed up on beaches has risen by 150 per cent in a year, according to a report.
Figures show the overall amount of rubbish found on Scots coasts has soared by 42 per cent.
The news comes after the Great British Beach Clean, organised by the Marine Conservation Society, in which volunteers picked up litter at sites across the UK in September.
More than 7000 wet wipes were recorded at Scots sites, with the Central Belt worst affected.
The society's Catherine Gemmell said: "No one wants to go to a beach and find themselves surrounded by washed-up wet wipes.
A Scottish Government spokesman said: "It's clear more needs to be done."
