More than three-quarters of children referred to weight management services over three years were classed as severely obese, figures show.
Public Health Scotland statistics show 3405 referrals for kids and young people aged 17 and younger between 2019 and 2022. A body&nbsp;mass index (BMI) breakdown could not be calculated for 39 per cent of referrals as it was not always clinically appropriate to do so.
However, 94 per cent of cases where a BMI - based on age, weight and height - was recorded had the young person classed as&nbsp;obese. Seventy-eight per cent were categorised as having severe obesity.
Referrals were also highest for those from the most deprived areas, accounting for 31 per cent over the three-year period, compared to 8 per cent for their more affluent counterparts.
Currently, 67 per cent of the&nbsp;Scottish population is overweight or obese.
Last night, Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton urged the Scottish Government to act. He said: "While alarming, these statistics should come as no surprise."
A Scottish Government spokesperson said: "We welcome this report."
