CLARE Balding has been confirmed as the lead presenter of Wimbledon for the BBC this year, following the retirement of Sue Barker.
Balding was favourite for the role, having worked at the tennis grand slam since 1995 as reporter, commentator and presenter.
Yesterday Balding, 52, admitted she'd need help in filling the role vacated by Barker, 66, at the end of last year's men's final following 30 years at the helm.
She said: "It's a huge honour ... but I am very aware that no one person can fill Sue's shoes.
"This will always be a team effort and we're lucky that the BBC line-up includes former pros with huge insight as well as wonderful reporters and commentators.
"It's my job to bring out the best in them and to help make our viewers feel they have a front row seat on the greatest sporting stage.
Balding's first major role on TV was as lead presenter for the BBC's horse racing coverage in 1997 and she has since covered major sporting events including seven Olympic Games.
Barbara Slater of BBC Sport said: "She will combine her passion and knowledge for the event with the energy she brings to both those working alongside her and watching at home.
