Hilary Evans, chief executive of Alzheimer's Research UK, said tests and therapies to slow or halt underlying diseases are finally within reach as years of studies provide the basis of a treatment revolution.
She added: "There are opportunities that just weren't there 10 years ago. This is kind of a new dawn. This is now about a decade where we will be delivering treatments."
Ms Evans knows that under current trends, one of her three children is likely to be diagnosed with dementia in their lifetime. But she hopes the next generation can be spared the distress of today if scientists get the resources needed. She has been made co-chair of the Government's Dame Barbara Windsor Dementia Mission, named after the late actress who had Alzheimer's.
