MY FAVOURITE THING? IT’S JULIE!’

Fresh from his role presenting Julie Andrews with her American Film Institute Life Achievement Award in Los Angeles in June, The Sound of Music star Nicholas Hammond can’t contain his joy while recounting the special moment five of the seven von Trapp kids reunited with their on-screen mum.

“We only had about 15 minutes [with Julie] on our own,” the 72-year-old actor tells New Idea. “We had a little family chat, which we always do when we’re all together … she wanted to know all our news.”

Nicholas, who is touring Australia in a stage production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, smiles as he speaks of the teenage crush he had on Julie.

“I think the crush came from the fact that I was so in awe of her,” Nicholas says. “By total coincidence, when I was 9 we happened to be in London, and on our last night my mother took me to the closing night of her performance in My Fair Lady.
