WHAT DO YOU get when you put four seemingly ordinary boys with killer talents? Magic, or what teens call it nowadays, eargasm—a sense of pleasure derived from listening to something, particularly music. Identifying themselves as a genre-fluid band, their story began when they met as a casual group of friends in 2015. After discovering that they each shared the same fiery passion for music, TY: DEL was then put together with Timothy and Ritchie on the guitar, Carlson on the keyboard and Roshan on the drums— though they are equally as talented in singing. Driven with a collective enthusiasm and spontaneity, the band went from performing covers at small gatherings and local indie showcases, to singing their own songs in front of a crowd of thousands at college events and youth festivals.
Topping local music charts, TY: DEL is not your typical neighbourhood band. In their own words, they have so much yet to discover in their musical pursuit. In this interview, the group of four incredibly talented members talks to us about their musical inspirations and their journey on breaking into the Malaysian-music scene.
What first got each of you into music and how did the idea of starting a band come about?
Ritchie: Super cliche but it was Ed Sheeran who got me into music, I admired his perspective on music. It was the way he really put meaning into his music that inspired me to put meaning into my own music. Before the band, I had already written a few really cheesy songs on my own. One day I decided to show it to a friend and found out he also wrote mega cheesy songs—that friend was Tim.
