Award-winning screenwriter Allan Scott's latest work hits closer to home (or in this case, family) ever than before. Titled The Spirit of 1926, Scott - whose works include the recent Netflix series, The Queen's Gambit - lent his keen sense of storytelling to The Macallan's latest global campaign film. The short film celebrates the real-life story of former managing director Janet Harbinson. Harbinson - also affectionately known as "Nettie" - was a key figure in The Macallan's history. She assumed control of the distillery in 1918 after the passing of her husband. Harbinson demonstrated her passion and dedication to craftsmanship and her love for the community, which helped rebuild the local area. Under Harbinson's leadership, The Macallan crafted The Macallan Fine & Rare 1926, which achieved legendary status after it fetched £1.5m at Sotheby's in 2019.
"We uncovered Janet Harbinson's story when researching the background to The Macallan Fine & Rare 1926, and we knew we had to share it as soon as we learned of her role in its distillation and maturation, as well as the deep influence she had on the future development of the brand," said Jaume Ferras, global creative director for The Macallan and a producer of the film.
Men's Folio had the pleasure of chatting with Allan Scott about being part of Janet Harbinson's biopic, The Spirit of 1926.
