With almost 8 billion tonnes of plastic flowing across the world, microplastics (MPs), a new class of pollutants, have emerged in our environment, raising the risk of a variety of health problems. Plastic contaminants can be found in the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. MPs are seen in a variety of products, including cosmetics, synthetic clothing, plastic bags, and bottles. Many of these products are easily discarded into the environment, and humans are increasingly being exposed to plastic even before birth.
