In a quest to move to zero carbon fuel, Cummins Group in India, leading power solutions technology provider, is proactively exploring ways to make the country a key global hub for hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) while also sharply increasing exports of these engines from India, a senior company executive said.
The initiative is being pushed partly by the PLI scheme which promotes domestic manufacturing of advanced automotive technology products, where Cummins India is one of the beneficiaries among 75 other auto companies.
According to Anjali Pandey, Chief Operating Officer (CEO), Cummins Group in India, Hydrogen ICE is a zero-carbon engine that can be cost effective for the Indian market as it mostly uses the existing auto ancillary ecosystem. "We are aiming to start the production of hydrogen ICE engines by early 2025. And I believe this can be a great way to be Atmanirbhar as we do not have to be dependent on China. Eventually we have the aspiration to move to the fuel cell in the long run as the technology matures," Pandey told Autocar Professional.
Meanwhile, the company will work on validation and testing of engine components and localisation, she added.
As part of the fuel-agnostic platform, Cummins India showcased its hydrogen internal combustion B6.7H engine at the recently held Auto Expo 2023.
When paired with green hydrogen, this engine produces zero well-to-wheel CO2 emissions, the company claims. Moreover, it also highlighted that the engine has an industry leading 700 bar hydrogen tank that enables quick refuelling.
