Crucially, Gadkari had a few years ago announced his intentions to bring in stringent laws for road related offenses, which include hefty fines, by amending the Motor Vehicle Act. While a section of the general public and law enforcers lauded the law, several states, including the BJPruled ones, opposed its implementation, seeing the fines as being too extreme. The controversy and the country-wide implementation of the law fizzled out soon.
He also introduced several safety related mandates for vehicle manufacturers. While, the intentions have been good and aim to make vehicle and pedestrian safety in India world class, several of the OEMs manufacturing mass-market cars claim it will have a deterrent effect as it will end up raising the sticker prices on the vehicles. Gadkari has also been pushing the oil and gas industry to move towards the adoption of blended fuels made from agri waste.
