Kidney disease is often called a “silent disease” as some people don’t notice any symptoms until it’s too late. Breonny Robson, general manager of clinical programs and partnerships at Kidney Health Australia, explains how to keep your kidneys healthy, and the signs to look out for that may indicate problems.
HEALTHY KIDNEYS
“Your kidneys have an important job in keeping your body healthy and they’re responsible for many important functions,” says Breonny.
They clean your blood by filtering out waste products, remove excess fluid (excess fluid and waste products are filtered by your kidneys into your urine and then excreted), control your blood pressure, make red blood cells and help maintain strong, healthy bones.
Breonny adds that there are a number of things we can do to keep our kidneys healthy and functional. These include maintaining a healthy weight through a healthy diet and exercise, drinking water when you’re thirsty, not smoking or taking illicit drugs, and limiting alcohol consumption.
Some common medications, such as anti-inflammatory drugs, can impair kidney function, so it’s best to talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking these if you have kidney problems.
