NOT THE QUICKEST way, but definitely the most appealing for those nostalgic for more refined, and less frantic, modes of transport than the airborne freighters of our domestic airways, is the ‘Caledonian Sleeper’, the relaunched, overnight train between London and Scotland, terminating either at Fort William (via Glasgow) or Inverness (via Edinburgh). This hugely popular route, which will soon scale even greater heights when the new generation of rolling-stock comes into service, provides a unique, uncomplicated experience of quiet comfort, whether the choice is to take one of the vast, armchair-style seats or to splash out on the pillows and duvet of a private compartment. What bliss it is to wake up to the purple heather and wispy mists of the Cairngorms and take breakfast passing through such familiarly named places as Dalwhinnie, Kingussie and Aviemore. However, the pinnacle is the pleasure of arriving at the chosen destination well-rested and with the whole day ahead.
