MARK Robinson insists the three new faces included in his England squad for the upcoming tour to India are not there just to make up the numbers.
Bryony Smith, Alice Davidson-Richards and Katie George have been called up to the squad for the first time, but World Cup winners Sarah Taylor and Katherine Brunt are not included.
The team was announced on Wednesday and Robinson believes the youngsters will freshen up the squad in order to develop ahead of an important year of T20 cricket with a World Cup in November.
He said: “We’ve picked some of the youngsters to wake a few people up because what we’re doing at the moment isn’t going to win you a World Cup, so we have to change that.
“If I was picking a team now then there’s every chance that two of them would start in the first game.
“We’ve got to get it right, but they’re not going to make the numbers up, they’re going with a chance to play.”
The decision to leave out the two senior figures was a reasoned one though, Robinson claimed, as
Taylor needed time to rest and Brunt had not yet recovered from a back injury she sustained playing in the WBBL.
