JAMIE Porter believes his call-up for next week’s first Test against India proves England still value county cricket despite Adil Rashid’s inclusion in the squad for Edgbaston.
Rashid’s selection, during a summer when the leg-spinner has given up red-ball cricket for Yorkshire but has excelled in white-ball formats for England, has caused controversy.
However, Porter’s promotion to the Test squad for the first time has come on the back of two-and-a-half years of prolific county form, including last summer when his 75 wickets at 16.82 helped Essex to a shock Championship title win.
“I think county cricket has always been recognised by the selectors,” said Porter. “Obviously there are separate occasions when somebody stands out in a different setting and you can’t ignore that. But I’ve always felt if I can do it in county cricket then I’ll get my go.”
Porter almost gave up cricket four years ago when, in the winter of 2014 he worked as a recruitment consultant after failing to get beyond Essex’s second XI.
