Chris Stocks finds that Jos Buttler wants international T20s to stay – but they need more relevance in the game
Jos Buttler has hit back at England coach Trevor Bayliss’call for international T20s to be scrapped, claiming it would be unpopular with players and rob the format of context.
Bayliss, speaking after the recent Tri-Series against Australia and New Zealand, argued that the packed schedule means the shortest form should only be played at international level in years when there is a World T20.
Buttler, though, is against the idea, with England’s limited-overs wicketkeeper-batsman saying: “I wouldn’t be a fan of that. I don’t think that’s the right way to go.
“I think T20 cricket is so strong then surely the pinnacle – as it would be for guys wanting to play Test match cricket – should be playing for your international side.
“Maybe it’s reducing the number of games as a whole to give them more context, and not tagged on to the end of a series where most of the main players are rested.
“I think for a professional cricketer, in any form of the game, your aspirations are always to represent your country.
“So, if you’re going to just play every six months before a World Cup, you’re probably going to lose more players and may as well not have a World Cup anyway – and the franchise tournaments become the biggest.”
Earlier this month, Buttler spoke of his belief that T20 would wipe out Test and one-day cricket and be the only format in the future.
