‘When the time's right, you try to call ‘em'

‘When the time's right, you try to call ‘em'

Q: What goes into your high rate of success with trick plays?

BD: Give the credit to the players, they’re the ones out there executing it. We do our best to do our due diligence on plays that might have a chance for that particular week; some of them are “check with me” plays that you’d only want versus a certain look. For example, the Cole (Beasley) play that he threw (against the Los Angeles Chargers), that was a “check with me” play. We had it called against Arizona at kind of the same area and they gave us a different coverage and Cole scored on that one too. That’s been a good play for us the past few weeks, the first play and the second play. But it’s the players’ game, they’ve got to go out there and they’ve got to execute and they’ve got to try to call it in a timely fashion when you think it’s got a chance to work and then you’ve got to trust the players. You do it at practice and you work on ‘em and if they look good, you keep ‘em in and when the time’s right you try to call ‘em.

Q: Is there a third variation of that Cole Beasley play, or will there be one in the future? Because the success rate has been pretty good thus far.

BD: No, I think we’ll put that one to bed. And, again, you have ‘em in some weeks and some weeks you don’t, based on what you perceive you’re going to get and if you can group some things together, you group ‘em together. And if you can’t, you go ahead and let it rip. That’s been a good play for us.

Dak Prescott, Cowboys 6-2 • 235 pounds • 27 years old A solid starter who has a nice TD-INT ratio over his first five seasons (104-40), Prescott is an accurate thrower and very mobile. However, he’s coming off a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle, so it remains to be seen if this will impact his game moving forward.

Hunter Henry, Chargers 6-5 • 250 pounds • 29 years old A very talented player, Henry has had issues staying healthy, unable to complete an NFL season, including missing the entire 2018 season with a torn ACL. But when healthy, he’s a terrific all-around tight end who really connected with Justin Herbert in 2020 with 60 catches. Henry is very good at finding holes in zone coverage.
