Witnessing first-hand the impact of global climate change, Israeli Wildlife photographer Roie Galitz talks to Caroline Schmidt about green peace, a photographers’responsibility and building a career

IT’S NIGH IMPOSSIBLE to be a profitable nature photographer these days: the travel, the equipment, the days spent waiting for bill-paying shots. some might ask why anyone does it, but for award-winning Israeli wildlife photographer, Roie Galitz the answer is simple: passion – passion for photography, for nature and for making change.
It’s quite rare to turn a career-making profit off pictures alone, so it’s no surprise to hear how this inspiring, high-performing photographer has built his success. his list of achievements and brand affiliations is humbling and somewhat overwhelming: Nikon Israel Ambassador, a Columbia outfit partner and presenter for Skoda Kodiaq SUV, founder of Israel’s photography Convention, conservationist, founder of a photography school, magazine editor, renowned public speaker and tutor about his behind-the-lens adventures, to name a few.
Roie is known for his intimate encounters with rare animals and photographing in the world’s wildest places that few have heard about, such as Kamchatka, Eurasia, in the Russian Far East. but his regular stomping grounds are Africa, Antarctica and islands in the Arctic Ocean, most recently to photograph polar bears in Svalbard, Norway, for the seventh time.
