Roger Federer claimed he has played his way into form and contention as his route back to a Wimbledon final opened up yesterday.

The eight-time champion will meet Hubert Hurkacz in today’s quarter-final after the Pole (right) knocked out world No.2 Daniil Medvedev.

Federer remains on collision course to meet hot favourite Novak Djokovic — who is bidding to equal his record — in a rematch of their 2019 epic.

Yet the chances of a 32nd Grand Slam final for the Swiss superstar seemed remote during his slow return to action this season after double knee surgery last year.

Protect

Federer, who turns 40 next month, won only one match in two tournaments before the French Open and then pulled out in Paris after three wins to protect his body.
