Warning of adder attacks on dogs

DOG walkers have been urged to keep pets on a lead as the warm, dry weather has brought out huge numbers of hibernating snakes.

Vets had to give lifesaving emergency treatment to six pets bitten by adders in five days in the West Country alone as they emerged to sunbathe in the grass.

Hattie Algar, of Penmellyn Veterinary Group in Cornwall, said: “Keep your dog on a lead, especially if you’re walking in sand dunes or grassland.

“Keep your eyes to the ground and give any snakes a very wide berth.”
